Coming home from Nathan's tutoring session we got talking about Mexico for some reason. Bruce and I try to explain to the boys that it is another country that is attached to the United States. Later that evening Nathan is working on a puzzle of America, so I have him bring it over to me and we have a little geography lesson.
I point out Ohio and tell them that is where we live. I point out Michigan and remind them that is where we went on vacation this past summer. I show them Texas since they are fascinated with Texas since uncle Bill goes there every fall. I point out Oklahoma where Bill also goes in the fall. I point out California and tell the boys that is where aunt Lynn lives and Mom and Dad went out there to visit a long time ago. They ask where Florida is and I show them. They ask what states I have been to and what states Bruce has been to. Then they ask what states they have been to.
Nathan then asks me the question that made me realize that he knows more than I give him credit for. He asked me where the big ship is that was laying over on it's side in the water. At first I didn't think that he could be talking about the cruise ship in Italy as I barely know anything about it. When I clarify, I realize that is indeed the ship he is talking about. I ask him if he remembers what a globe looks like. I help him remember by reminding him that it looks like a ball. I tell him that the boat tipped over in Italy and that is a country on the other side of the world (ball). I was flabbergasted that he has some knowledge of current events. I don't give him enough credit.
