Fishing

Yesterday morning, my Dad stopped over after running to the hardware store in New Bremen and asked the boys if they wanted to go fishing later that day. Of course the boys were all excited and said yes.

We go out to my parents later on so that the boys can try their hand at fishing. Dad gives his pole over to Nathan and shows him what to do. Nathan gets the knack of it pretty quickly. My brother Bill walks out and grabs the second pole and attempts to show Darren how to fish. I thought that will be interesting as Darren has a really hard time sitting still. Sure enough, he can only sit still with his line in the water for 30 seconds or so before he has to lift it up out of the water and look at his hook, or quickly jerk it to the left or right. He checks his hook and is super-excited to learn that he caught a worm!

Nathan is getting some nibbles and with Dad watching over his shoulder, Nathan does catch a few fish. Darren however gave up pretty quickly. Darren got upset after Nathan caught his third or fourth fish and said that he wants to catch a fish. He goes over to Bill again and helps Bill hold the pole. Bill told Darren to sit still. This makes Darren mad (because he was tired) and as Darren is storming off, Bill gets a bite. We tell Darren to get over to uncle Bill so that he can help bring the fish in, but he doesn't move.

It was getting late, but they had to watch and see how Dad cleans fish. They watch Dad cut a couple of bluegill, and then they watch him clean a bass. Nathan asks what that yellow stuff is and Dad tells him that they are eggs. You can tell Nathan was confused as that does not look like eggs that he is used to, so I explained fish eggs are a lot smaller than normal eggs.

When we get home later that night, Nathan tells Bruce that he caught a couple of fish all by himself. Darren tells Bruce that he also caught a fish, but he helped Bill catch it. The boys also gave my parents strict instructions that they are not to eat the fish until they are there and can eat them too!
